Nobody much talks about the opt-out Eddy Curry has at the end of this year because everyone just assumes, rightfully, that Eddy will never sign another contract worth $11 million per year. But one thing that Eddy Curry and all Knicks fans know is that nothing is guaranteed with Eddy Curry. In fact, if Eddy’s latest comeback is another abomination, his current contract could very well be his last one. He’ll “earn” $11 million next year and that’s it for him.
However, in the strange life that is Eddy Curry’s this is where his interests could actually align with those of the Knicks’ from a monetary standpoint. Everyone knows that Curry is a huge anchor threatening to drown the Knicks’ 2010 plans. There is a solution though. Could Curry be convinced to opt-out this summer, with the Knicks in turn promising to re-sign him to a new 4 year deal (3 years beyond his current deal), with weight and conditioning requirements, at $20 million?
For Curry, he effectively doubles his income with a brand new NBA contract where there might not be one waiting at the end of his current one.
For the Knicks, the arrangement has about the same effect as trading Jared Jeffries for an expiring contract, enabling them to potentially sign 2 max free agents, and you would have to think that the long term money they are spending on Curry would be recouped in multiples if the Knicks put a playoff team on the floor.
Just something to think about.

Interesting idea. Like restructuring a contract. Is this allowed under the collective bargaining agreement?
Interesting idea. I wonder if that’s allowed.
Why wouldn’t it be allowed? He has an opt-out. I think it is similar to the Joe Smith/T-Wolves arrangement but different. Here he is taking less money after having made more. There Smith was taking less money with the intent to make more later. I don’t know if it violates cap rules, but Curry has an opt-out, who is Stern to say what the best strategy is for Curry to use it…
